Description Nature Trails: Santo Tomas Cave Trail, Pinar del Rio. Cuba
Length of duration of the outing: 1 hour and 45 minutes. The journey starts in the Escuela Nacional de Espeleología, located in the Sierra del Quemado Southern hillside, where commences the "Santo Tomás" cavern system, 45 km long in underground galleries. The excursionists go through a forest track 300 meters long, where birds thrive, as well as the visitor can watch endemic mollusks and reptiles all the way until the arrival to the mouth of the cavern. In the inside, the excursionists can watch scientific reproductions with motives of antique local art painted on the rocks and of an aboriginal burial
Proceeding through the galleries, the excursionists reach a natural balcony from where they can admire the view of Santo Tomas Valley. Afterward, another gallery allows access to different halls, decorated by a wide range of secondary formations until the one named El Hoyo de los Givaritos. Then the excursionists go into the La Cueva de la Lechuza (The Owl's Cave), where they can admire enigmatic secondary formations resembling capricious animals like reptiles, birds, felines, etc., returning by the same way to the point of origin.

Because of the richness, variety and excellent preservation of its flora and fauna, Pinar del Río is called "the garden of Cuba." UNESCO has declared the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and the Rosario Mountain Range biosphere reserves, and the Viñales Valley a world cultural heritage. The land in which the world's best tobacco is grown also offers you wonderful opportunities for scuba diving, hunting, fishing or simply relaxing and tanning at the beach.,
Since the 19th century, Havana residents have been drawn by the natural beauty of Vueltabajo, and they have flocked to Los Portales Cave, to San Diego de los Baños, to receive the benefits of its mineral-medicinal and thermal waters; and to the Viñales Valley, to gaze at its natural beauty.,
Pinar del Río is just 174 km (108 miles) from Havana. A good highway links the two cities. The architecture in its historic center is eclectic, and its low houses in gentle colors, whose porches seem to form an endless gallery, have great charm. On the outskirts of the city, modern buildings break its horizontal lines. ,
When visiting Pinar del Río's provincial capital, be sure to tour the Guayabita del Pinar Distillery, where the drink of the same name is still made by hand, following an age-old recipe; the Guash Palace, the Milanés Theater and the Rumayor Cabaret.,
Quiet, comfortable hotels have been built in some of the most beautiful spots in Pinar del Río, to facilitate your enjoyment of Nature. Cayo Levisa has a delightful, sunny beach, and the province also offer excellent opportunities for scuba diving, hunting and fishing. - Your first-hand experiences really help other travelers. Thanks!

anbergamini“Nice but too short ”
Nice trip in the cave but not too much to see and they cannot value this nice naturalistic value. In some parts it was also a bit dangerous due to its slipperiness (it rained the day before). -

Weizbauer“Sport activity but worth it ”
One has to be sportive to do this trip. First we went up a hill to even reach the beginning of the cave and within the cave there were some rather hiking paths than walking. I would recommend to take an extra torch with you because the ones on the helmets are not that bright. Sometimes I felt a little... More -

GAT2786034“Vinales valley ”
We took a day trip to the valley, stopping off at a cigar factory on the way. The rocks next to the Indian cave are painted to show the history of the country. The mural is not that old and I believe that it was commissioned by Fidel Castro. The vista to the cave was ok. We only walked in... More -

beachluvver“Biggest cave system in Cuba ”
You climb 120 feet up to the entrance (not difficult) and visit two levels of the cave partly via a steep ladder. If you are okay with heights then this will give you the best experience of cuban caves. The others are tame by comparison. You are provided with helmets with a headlight, which proved to be a good thing... More -

Zuzana B“Short, interesting but not so special ”
There are 2 possibilities - short and long tour (8/10CUC). You have to have a headlamp to go in there. There are very nice formations there and some can even make sounds when you knock on it. There is one plant able to grow in a complete dark. It is worth seeing, but our caves in Slovakia are bigger and... More -

AidaPus“Feeling of accomplishment added value to me ”
I am not sure, but I think some people confuses this cave with Cueva del Indo (the latter with a boat ride and paved ground to walk on). Cueva Santo Thomas, the level open for "ordinary tourists" like me, have a steep stair climb to its entrance. If I had used a towel when I reached the entrance, it would... More -

Joost N“Adventurous ”
Be warned, this cave is not for young children! And bring good shoes with you. A really adventurous cave with only at a few places stairs, no fences to protect. You get a helm with light with you, it is nice. We think it's the best place to visit in the valley. -

neledesloover“Vale la pena ”
We all enjoyed the visit to the cuevas de St Tomas. You really have the feeling you are discovering something that has never been seen before. Jesus was the perfect guide - he showed us exceptional formations, played some organ music and chose the right track for the group I was traveling with (Joker, Belgium). I would recommend a visit!
