Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.
The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.
The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.
Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.
Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

Review about Movie theater: Payret
Very good
karlMovies
It opens on January 24th 1877 and was called "The Red Coliseum," for being completely upholstered in red. In 1878 the Theater was named "Peace." The legend says that due to a love story between the Payret and the rich lady María del Pino, who gave her entire fortune to this character for the theater company. The theater was closed in 1885, according to comments by a series of disasters occured in the building after the abandonment of Mary and the curses she makes to the place. In 1890 Dr. Anastacio Saaverio bought it to the Treasury. He had several film records. The first Cuban film premiered in the silent era was The Bushes, on November 24th 1915. Through the Payret paraded with great successful most of the theater companies of all kinds such as: The Opera, Operetta, Zarzuela, Drama, Comedy or journal. Its last perfomance was a March 9th 1948 closing its doors after 71 years of opening to the public. The opening of the new Payret theater occurred on September 10th 1951 with a big performance in benefit of the League Against Cancer, where debuted the Havana Casino Orchestra, directed by Rodrigo Prats. Currently the Payret has become a cultural center and is one of the main venues of the Latinamerican Film Festival. Among the areas that distinguish it is the usual Close Encounters, of the Provincial Center Film directed by the renowned and respected filmmaker Jorge Calderon.
